Your Tote, Your Rules
IBC totes are incredibly versatile containers — and with the right modifications, they become even more capable. Our fabrication team can cut, weld, drill, and adapt IBC tanks for virtually any application you can imagine.
Our modification shop is staffed by 3 experienced fabricators with combined experience totaling over 35 years in plastics welding, steel fabrication, and industrial container engineering. We complete an average of 120 custom modification projects per month, ranging from simple port additions that take 30 minutes to complex multi-feature builds that require 2-3 days of fabrication time.
Every modification we perform is designed to maintain the structural integrity of the IBC tote while adding the functionality you need. We use only materials that are chemically compatible with HDPE and galvanized steel, and every weld, cut, and fitting is pressure-tested or load-tested before the unit leaves our shop. If we cannot build what you need safely, we will tell you upfront and suggest alternatives.
Engineering Consultation Process
Every custom modification begins with a free consultation. Whether you know exactly what you need or just have a rough idea, our process is designed to take you from concept to finished product efficiently.
Describe Your Application
Tell us what you want the modified IBC to do. What will it hold? What environment will it operate in? What fittings, connections, or features do you need? If you have drawings, sketches, or reference photos, share them. If you only have a verbal description, that works too — we translate concepts into specifications every day.
Feasibility Review & Design
Our lead fabricator reviews your requirements for feasibility, safety, and material compatibility. We check that the proposed modifications will not compromise the structural rating of the cage or bottle, that the materials are compatible with your intended contents, and that the finished product meets any applicable codes. We provide a marked-up diagram showing all proposed modifications with dimensions within 2 business days.
Quotation & Approval
You receive a detailed quote covering: base tote cost (if we supply it), each modification itemized with labor and materials, estimated completion date, and any testing or certification included. Quotes are valid for 30 days. For repeat orders (10+ identical units), we provide volume discounts of 10-20% on modification labor.
Fabrication & Testing
Once approved, fabrication begins. Standard modifications (ports, valves, basic cuts) are completed within 3-5 business days. Complex builds (heating systems, multi-port assemblies, structural reinforcements) take 7-10 business days. Every modification is tested: ports are pressure-tested at 5 PSI for 10 minutes, welds are visually inspected to AWS D1.1 standards, and mechanical components are function-tested before release.
Delivery & Documentation
The completed unit is photographed from multiple angles and delivered to your site (or held for pickup). You receive a modification report documenting all work performed, materials used, test results, and care/maintenance recommendations. For ongoing orders, we keep your specification on file for instant reorder.
Popular Modifications
These are our most frequently requested modifications. Each listing includes detailed specifications, material options, and typical lead times. All pricing is in addition to the base tote cost (you can supply your own tote or purchase one from our inventory).
Rain Barrel Conversion
Convert any IBC tote into a high-capacity rain collection system. Includes screened inlet, overflow port, and bottom spigot. Optional opaque wrapping to prevent algae.
Additional Ports & Outlets
Need extra drain points, fill ports, or sampling valves? We cut and weld additional fittings at any position on the tank. All connections are leak-tested.
Mixer & Agitator Mounts
We fabricate mounts for electric or pneumatic mixers, blenders, and agitators. Custom bracket designs ensure proper alignment and seal integrity.
Heating Systems
Install heating blankets, immersion heaters, or trace heating systems for temperature-sensitive products. Includes thermostat controllers for precise temp management.
Garden Bed Conversion
Cut IBC totes horizontally or vertically to create raised garden beds, planter boxes, or compost bins. The steel cage provides structure and the liner retains moisture.
Insulation Wraps
Custom insulation jackets to maintain product temperature in cold weather or reduce heat transfer. Available in standard and food-grade materials.
Additional Modification Types
Beyond our most popular modifications, we offer a range of specialized services for unique applications.
Sight Glass / Level Indicator
Clear polycarbonate or acrylic sight tube mounted vertically on the bottle exterior, connected at top and bottom through bulkhead fittings. Allows real-time visual level monitoring without opening the lid.
Ventilation & Breather Caps
Replace the standard cap with a pressure-vacuum relief vent to prevent tank collapse during pumping or expansion during temperature changes. Essential for closed-system dispensing applications.
Pump Mounting System
Steel bracket assembly welded to the cage that supports a drum pump, diaphragm pump, or centrifugal pump. Includes vibration isolation pads and electrical conduit routing along the cage frame.
Manifold & Multi-Outlet Systems
Custom manifold assemblies that split the main outlet into 2, 3, or 4 independent discharge lines, each with its own ball valve for individual control. Used for dispensing to multiple points simultaneously.
Forklift Guard & Reinforcement
Additional steel plating welded to the cage at fork entry points to prevent puncture of the HDPE bottle during forklift handling. Recommended for operations where totes are moved frequently by unskilled forklift operators.
Custom Labeling & Branding
Apply your company logo, product labels, safety placards, or color-coded identification markings to the bottle or cage. We offer vinyl decals, stenciled paint, and engraved metal tags.
Material Compatibility Guide
Choosing the right materials for fittings, gaskets, and modifications is critical to ensure chemical compatibility with your intended contents. Here is a quick reference guide for common product categories.
| Product Type | Fitting Material | Gasket Material | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water & Mild Solutions | Polypropylene | EPDM | Standard, lowest cost option |
| Food & Beverage | Polypropylene (FDA) | EPDM (FDA) or Silicone | FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 compliant materials required |
| Petroleum & Oils | Stainless Steel 316L | Buna-N (Nitrile) | EPDM swells in petroleum; always use Buna-N |
| Solvents & Ketones | PVDF or SS 316L | Viton (FKM) | Verify HDPE compatibility; some solvents attack HDPE |
| Strong Acids (pH < 2) | PVDF or PTFE-lined SS | PTFE or Viton | HDPE bottle rated for most mineral acids to 50% concentration |
| Strong Bases (pH > 12) | Polypropylene or SS 316L | EPDM or PTFE | HDPE excellent for caustics; avoid aluminum fittings |
| High Temperature (> 140 F) | Stainless Steel 316L | Viton or PTFE | HDPE softens above 160 F; consider de-rating fill volume |
This guide covers common scenarios. For unusual chemicals or extreme conditions, we consult manufacturer compatibility charts and can perform coupon testing (immersing a sample of the proposed material in your product for 72 hours) to verify suitability before fabrication.
Recent Project Examples
Here are a few examples of custom modification projects we have completed recently. These illustrate the range of what is possible with an IBC tote and the right fabrication expertise.
Brewery Fermentation Vessel (x8 units)
A craft brewery in St. Charles needed affordable fermentation tanks. We modified 8 Grade A IBC totes with: top-entry 4-inch tri-clamp port for yeast pitching and sampling, 1.5-inch side port at the 10-gallon mark for racking, bottom dump valve upgraded to 2-inch stainless tri-clamp butterfly, thermowell port for temperature probe, and full food-grade sanitization cleaning. The client saved approximately $2,800 per unit compared to purpose-built fermenters. Completed in 8 business days.
Mobile Wash Station for Construction Site
A general contractor needed portable handwash stations. We modified 4 IBC totes with: dual 3/4-inch spigots on opposite sides (for two simultaneous users), foot-pedal activated flow valves to conserve water, top-mounted screened fill port for garden hose refilling, pump-mounted soap dispenser bracket, and drain port with gray-water collection fitting. Total cost per unit was 60% less than renting commercial portable sinks. Completed in 6 business days.
Chemical Dispensing System (x24 units)
A janitorial supply company needed IBC totes configured for pump-dispensing concentrated cleaning chemicals. Each unit received: a 2-inch cam-lock fitting at the bottom for quick-connect to their dispensing pumps, a 2-inch breather vent cap to prevent vacuum lock during pumping, a graduated sight glass for level monitoring, Viton gaskets throughout (solvent-compatible), and custom vinyl labels with their branding and product identification. This was a repeat order at volume pricing. Completed in 10 business days for all 24 units.
Aquaponics System for Urban Farm
An urban farming cooperative designed an aquaponics system using 6 modified IBC totes. We performed: horizontal cuts on 3 totes to create grow beds (top halves) and fish tanks (bottom halves), bulkhead fittings for 1.5-inch PVC plumbing between units, bell siphon mounting ports in each grow bed, screened overflow ports to prevent fish escape, and opaque black wrapping on all fish tank sections to block algae-promoting light. Completed in 7 business days.
