STL IBCRecycle

Pre-Owned Totes, Plenty of Life Left

Our used IBC totes offer exceptional value for businesses and individuals who need reliable liquid storage without the premium price of new containers. Every used tank in our inventory has been visually inspected and graded so you know exactly what you're purchasing. We maintain a rolling stock of 300+ used totes across all grades, sizes, and prior-content categories, making us the largest used IBC dealer in the greater St. Louis metropolitan area.

Used IBC totes are perfect for water storage, rainwater collection, agricultural irrigation, non-food industrial applications, and countless DIY projects. By choosing used, you're directly preventing these containers from entering landfills — each tote you buy diverts approximately 130 lbs of HDPE plastic and galvanized steel from the waste stream.

Every used tote we sell comes with a visual inspection report noting bottle clarity, cage condition, valve function, pallet integrity, and known prior contents. We tag each container with its grade (A, B, or C), original manufacture date, and the date it entered our yard. No surprises, no guesswork.

Available Grades

Grade A — Excellent

Most Popular

Minimal cosmetic wear. Bottle is clear or lightly tinted, no cracks or structural damage. Cage is straight and undamaged. Valve is fully functional. Previously held food-safe or non-staining liquids. Suitable for most non-food applications.

Grade A totes typically originate from a single-use cycle in the food and beverage industry — juices, syrups, edible oils, liquid sweeteners, or purified water. Because these products do not stain or degrade HDPE, the bottles remain clear and odor-free. Cages show little to no rust, and pallets are structurally sound with no cracked boards or bent steel.

This grade is the best choice for rainwater harvesting, potable water emergency storage (with proper treatment), livestock watering, aquaponics, pressure washer supply tanks, and any visible installation where appearance matters. Many customers also choose Grade A for DIY hot tubs, fish tanks, and backyard projects.

Clean bottleStraight cageWorking valveGood palletSingle-use historyNo odor

Grade B — Good

Moderate cosmetic wear. Bottle may have some discoloration or light staining but is structurally sound. Cage may have minor bends that don't affect stability. Valve functions properly. Great for water storage, agricultural use, and industrial applications.

Grade B totes have typically completed 2-3 service cycles or held products that left light residual tinting — such as soy sauce, light-colored soaps, glycerin, or diluted agricultural chemicals. The bottle may appear slightly amber, yellow, or cloudy but remains free of cracks, warps, and UV degradation. Cages may have one or two bars with minor bends (less than 15 degrees from plumb) that do not compromise stacking safety.

This is our most popular grade for agricultural irrigation, construction site water supply, industrial coolant storage, and bulk soap or detergent handling. Grade B totes deliver excellent functional performance at a lower price point than Grade A, making them the smart choice when cosmetics are secondary.

Light staining OKMinor cage wearFunctionalMulti-cycle historyGreat value

Grade C — Fair

Significant cosmetic wear but still fully functional. Bottle may be heavily stained or discolored. Cage may have visible bends. Pallet may show wear. Ideal for non-visible applications, bulk storage, or DIY projects where appearance doesn't matter.

Grade C totes have seen extensive service — often 4 or more fill cycles — or previously held deeply colored or strongly scented products such as molasses, dark dyes, mineral oils, or concentrated cleaning chemicals. Bottles may be opaque or heavily tinted. Cages may have multiple bent bars (none exceeding 30 degrees). Pallets may have cracked or replaced boards but remain forklift-operational.

Despite their appearance, Grade C totes are structurally sound, leak-free, and fully capable of holding liquid at their rated capacity. They are the budget leader for applications like non-potable water storage on remote properties, waste oil collection, construction site dewatering, and any scenario where the tote will be hidden from view. Grade C is also the most popular choice for customers converting totes into compost bins, worm farms, or planter beds where the bottle is cut open anyway.

How to Choose the Right Tote

1. Identify Your Liquid

HDPE is compatible with a wide range of liquids including water, mild acids (pH 3+), mild bases (pH up to 12), alcohols under 50% concentration, most vegetable and mineral oils, glycerin, liquid soaps, and agricultural fertilizers. HDPE is NOT recommended for strong oxidizers (concentrated nitric acid, chlorine gas), aromatic solvents (toluene, xylene), or halogenated hydrocarbons (methylene chloride). If in doubt, consult our chemical compatibility chart or contact us with the specific product name and SDS.

2. Consider Prior Contents

For non-food applications like irrigation, construction water, or waste collection, prior contents are generally not a concern — any grade will work. For applications involving plants, livestock, or aquatic life, choose totes that previously held food-grade liquids (ask us — we track this). For food-contact applications, skip used totes and choose our reconditioned food-grade or new tanks.

3. Match the Grade to Your Budget

Grade A costs more but looks professional and has the longest remaining service life. Grade B saves you money with minimal functional trade-offs. Grade C is the lowest price and is ideal when the tote is hidden, temporary, or destined for modification (cutting, drilling, painting). If buying in volume, mixing grades can optimize your total spend — for example, Grade A for customer-facing locations and Grade C for back-of-house storage.

4. Choose 275 or 330 Gallon

The 275-gallon is the most widely available and sits at 46 inches tall. The 330-gallon is 7 inches taller (53 inches) and holds 20% more liquid on the same pallet footprint. If ceiling height and clearance are not an issue, the 330-gallon offers better cost-per-gallon economics. The 275-gallon is preferred for applications that require passage through standard doorways or fitting under low shelves.

5. Plan for Accessories

Most used totes come with the original 2-inch butterfly valve. If you need a garden hose connection, add a 2"-to-3/4" garden hose adapter ($8-12). For better flow control, consider upgrading to a 2" ball valve ($25-35). If storing outdoors in winter, a heating blanket or insulation jacket prevents freezing. Browse our full accessories catalog for compatible add-ons.

Storage & Maintenance Tips

Placement

Place your IBC on a flat, level surface capable of supporting the full weight (up to 2,900 lbs for a filled 330-gallon). Concrete pads are ideal. Compacted gravel works for temporary installations. Avoid soft ground, slopes, or surfaces that can shift. If outdoors, position the valve side away from foot traffic to prevent accidental opening.

UV Protection

HDPE degrades with prolonged UV exposure, becoming brittle over 2-4 years in direct sunlight. To maximize bottle life, place your tote under a roof, lean-to, or shade structure. If full shade is not possible, an opaque IBC cover ($40-60) or a coat of UV-resistant spray paint will block 95%+ of UV radiation. White or light-colored covers also reduce solar heating of the contents.

Freeze Prevention

Water expands approximately 9% when freezing. A full 275-gallon IBC that freezes solid can crack the bottle and distort the cage. In freeze-prone climates, either drain the tote before winter, install a thermostatically controlled heating blanket ($150-300), or wrap the tote in insulation blankets and keep the water circulating with a small pump. A 275-gallon tote filled with water at 55°F takes roughly 72 hours to freeze solid at 15°F ambient — but the top and valve areas freeze first.

Algae Prevention

Algae grows in any container exposed to sunlight that holds untreated water. Clear and lightly tinted bottles (Grade A) are more susceptible than heavily stained ones (Grade C). To prevent algae: keep the tote out of direct sunlight, use an opaque cover or paint the bottle black, and add 1/4 teaspoon of unscented household bleach (8.25% sodium hypochlorite) per 275 gallons every 2-4 weeks. Alternatively, use a food-grade algaecide approved for potable water systems.

Valve Maintenance

The standard 2-inch butterfly valve is simple and reliable but can develop leaks if the internal EPDM gasket dries out or degrades. Inspect the valve quarterly. If it drips, replace the gasket ($3-5) or swap the entire valve ($15-25). Always close the valve fully after dispensing — leaving it partially open accelerates wear. For applications requiring precise flow control, upgrade to a 2-inch ball valve with a quarter-turn handle.

Long-Term Storage (Empty)

If storing an empty IBC for extended periods, leave the cap slightly loose to allow air exchange and prevent vacuum collapse on hot days. Store out of direct sunlight. Empty IBCs can be stacked two-high to save floor space. Ensure the valve is closed and capped to keep insects and debris out. An empty IBC stored properly will remain serviceable for 5-10+ years.
